A Robust Folk Theorem for the Prisoner's Dilemma
نویسندگان
چکیده
We prove the folk theorem for the Prisoner’s dilemma using strategies that are robust to private monitoring. From this follows a limit folk theorem: when players are patient and monitoring is sufficiently accurate, (but private and possibly independent) any feasible individually rational payoff can be obtained in sequential equilibrium. The strategies used can be implemented by finite (randomizing) automata. ∗Thanks to Görkem Celik for valuable research assistance. †Economics Department, Northwestern University. This paper proposes and studies a tractable subset of Nash equilibria, belieffree review-strategy equilibria, in repeated games with private monitoring. The payoff set of this class of equilibria is characterized in the limit as the discount factor converges to one for games where players observe statistically independent signals. As an application, we develop a simple sufficient condition for ...
متن کاملThe Folk Theorems in the Framework of Evolution and Cooperation
Proceeding from the latest versions of the Folk Theorems, the present paper shows that ”natural” evolution of behavior in repeated games in human populations is a very unstable process which may be easily manipulated by outside forces. Any feasible and individually rational payoff of the game may be converted in the globally stable outcome by arbitrary small perturbation of the payoff functions...
متن کاملBelief-free Equilibria in Repeated Games∗
We introduce a class of strategies which generalizes examples constructed in two-player games under imperfect private monitoring. A sequential equilibrium is belief-free if, after every private history, each player’s continuation strategy is optimal independently of his belief about his opponents’ private histories. We provide a simple and sharp characterization of equililibrium payoffs using t...
متن کاملThe Repeated Prisoner’s Dilemma in a Network
Imperfect private monitoring in an infinitely repeated discounted Prisoner’s Dilemma played on a communication network is studied. Players observe their direct neighbors’ behavior only, but communicate strategically the repeated game’s history throughout the network. The delay in receiving this information requires the players to be more patient to sustain the same level of cooperation as in a ...
متن کاملEvolution and Information in a Prisoner’s Dilemma Game
In an environment of anonymous random matching, Kandori [1992] showed that with a sufficiently rich class of simple information systems the folk theorem holds. We specialize to the Prisoner’s Dilemma and examine the stochastic stability of a process of learning and evolution in this setting. If the benefit of future cooperation is too small, then there is no cooperation. When the benefit of coo...
